The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, on Wednesday, directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to decide on a plea filed by IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur, who had demanded that he be called "casteless" in official records.

The Bench comprising Justice Satyendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Rajnish Kumar noted that Mr. Thakur had made several representations to the authorities, reportedly asserting that he considered caste system a dividing factor and was hence, in favor of a casteless society.

His plea before the High Court was, however, confined to a direction to the authorities to consider his representations in this regard. Therefore, allowing the petition, the Court ordered the State to consider Mr. Thakur's plea within two months.
