  • IDIA kicks off operations in Mumbai, organizes “A walk to Awake”

IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) kicked off operations in Mumbai this Saturday by successfully organizing ‘A Walk to Awake’, which commenced with a walk from Azad Maidan at 10:30am.

During the walk, IDIA well-wishers and student volunteers from GLC, Mumbai, led by Mr. Arnab Roy, Director In-Charge of the IDIA Mumbai Chapter and Ms. Sachi Jain, Team Leader of the IDIA Mumbai Chapter, interacted with the people of Mumbai to spread awareness about law as a career. Mr. Rahul Sarella, Partner, Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh Shroff & Co., Mumbai, also conducted a brief sensitization session in Kannada for students from Kannada Bhavan Society High School, a Kannada-medium School, enlightening them about the legal profession and how IDIA enables children from underprivileged communities to become leading lawyers and community leaders.

Mr. Rahul Sarella along with Ms. Ambareen Mujawar, Chief Advisor, IDIA Mumbai Chapter and Ms. Ekta Verma, Deputy Team Leader, IDIA Mumbai Chapter, also spoke to the Dabbawalas of Mumbai about how the IDIA movement aims to empower underprivileged and marginalized communities in India by transform students from such communities into world-class lawyers and community leaders.

The walk culminated at Churchgate station at 11:30 am with the performance of a short yet powerful street play titled ‘Aashayein’. Comprising a cast of IDIA volunteers Sana Siddiqui, Sanchita Hule, Soham Bannerjee, Tanvi Jawale, Sourabh Jain and Itisha Khandelwal, the play depicted the perceptional prejudice people foster about the profession of law and IDIA’s mission.

The play was followed by a Sensitization Programme and Aptitude Test at the Government Law College, Mumbai. An Aptitude Test was successfully conducted for interested candidates to identify and select those with potential from underprivileged communities.
