The Jharkhand High Court recently directed the State Government to file an affidavit elucidating upon the steps taken to check adulteration of edibles in the State.

A Bench comprising Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice B.B. Mangalmurthy was hearing a PIL filed by Advocate Rajeshwar Pandey who had challenged the transfer of the then SDO Bhor Singh Yadav to Jamtara.

Mr. Yadav had exposed nearly two dozen business establishments which were accused of being involved in adulteration of edibles in Ranchi.

While the Court expressed its reservations over the acceptance of the Officer’s transfer as the subject matter of the Public Interest Litigation, it took note of the issues exposed by him, and observed, “Incidence of adulteration of food items with spurious materials were found during course of raid in the town of Ranchi by a team led by the Sub-Divisional Officer, Sadar. Petitioner has sought to raise his concern in the instant PIL as it has the tendency to affect human health and life. We also take it seriously.”

It, thereafter adjourned the matter for a period of two weeks for the State to file its reply.
