The Jharkhand High Court would take up 1,000 sensitive cases for speedy trial from July. The state government has been told to select such cases whose disposal is important for maintaining law and order in the state.

In a meeting held recently, the Acting Chief Justice of the high court directed the state government to provide the list as soon as possible.

“After taking steps for disposal of 501 cases last year, the judiciary has now decided to take up another 1,000 cases for speedy disposal. The hearing in the cases would start from mid-July,” said Ambuj Nath, Registrar General of Jharkhand High Court.

In view of the directive, the police departments concerned have been asked to prepare the lists of cases immediately so that those could be put up before the court by May 28.

In a letter to the senior police officers, the Criminal Investigation Department has asked to select cases related to Arms Act, SC/ST Act, rape, POCSO Act, explosive substance Act, NDPS Act, corruption, defalcation of government property and money, extortion, loot and such cases where the action is to be taken under the crime control Act.

According to the directive, 10 percent of the cases each should be related to rape and arms Acts each and 5 percent of the cases each should be related to SC/ST Act, POSCO Act and NDPS Acts and the organized crime Act. The district has been asked to select those cases where the number of witnesses is not more than 10 and the prime witnesses are government employees, especially doctors and investigation officers.
