The Supreme Court, on Friday, constituted a medical board for examination of a 13 year-old rape survivor on a plea for abortion of her 22-week pregnancy.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud constituted the Board which comprises of five senior doctors of AIIMs. This Board was directed to examine the survivor on Saturday and produce the report before it on Monday.

As per a TOI report, the girl had been raped by her landlord and her ordeal came to light when she was taken to the hospital for indigestion and bloated stomach. She has now approached the Court through Advocate Divyesh Pratap Singh.

“The victim is a minor girl and she is physically and mentally incapable of carrying this pregnancy. She will have to face severe psychological, physical and emotional trauma of going through a full term pregnancy and eventually be in a helpless situation either to fend for herself or for her child. It is worth mentioning she is a Class 2 student, delivery and bringing up the child will put an abrupt end to her education, driving her further into poverty,” Mr. Singh was quoted as saying.
