The father-in-law of the deceased victim of ‘honour killing’ in Tamil Nadu, and five others have been sentenced to death by the Principal District and Sessions court in Tirupur, as per Hindu report.

Out of 11 accused, the District Judge Alamelu Natarajan acquitted three, including the mother-in-law of Dalit youth Shankar.

The prosecution had alleged that Shankar and Kausalya, an inter-caste couple, were attacked at the behest of the latter’s parents who did not like her marrying a Dalit man. They were brutally attacked by three persons in full public view near a bus stand in Udumalpet on March 13, 2016.

Shankar died on the way to hospital while his wife survived, though with severe head injuries.

The prosecution had charged the parents of Kausalya viz. Chinnasamy and Annalakshmi, and nine others with offences under the Indian Penal Code and SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
