    Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA) is an organization started by Professor Shamnad Basheer. IDIA identifies underprivileged students with an aptitude for law and trains them for law entrance exams over a period of 2-3 years. IDIA not only enables access to legal education, but also fosters diversity at the leading law schools and enriches the very process of legal education.

    IDIA Odisha has announced the first edition of its Article Writing Competition on the contemporary theme of 'Corporate Governance'. The competition offers the winning author(s) with an esteemed internship opportunity at Nishith Desai Associates. Publication Partner: Indian Review of Corporate and Commercial Laws (IRCCL)The Competition aims to raise funds for the IDIA Charitable Trust and will also provide a common platform for various diverse minds to come together and share their respective concerns and ideas, thereby uniting in this common cause.

    Sub-themes:

    1. Adequacy of Shareholder Remedy in India
    2. Increasing Litigation on ESG Governance in India.
    3. Labour and Employment in Corporate Governance.
    4. Corporate Governance in family-owned organizations.

    Please note that the above-mentioned sub-themes are merely indicative in nature and the participants can make submissions on their independent topics, keeping in mind that they fall under the umbrella of 'Corporate Governance'.

    SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

    • The articles must be exclusively submitted in English.
    • The word limit for submissions should be between 1,000 to 1,500 words.
    • The title of the article should be 100 characters or less.
    • The article should be analytical in nature.
    • The articles or response pieces submitted for publication should be an original work of the author and should have not been published previously or currently submitted for publication to any other platform. Plagiarism will lead to disqualification from the Competition.
    • The author is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the statement of facts, opinions or views in the submission.
    • Submissions should not contain content that is offensive, abusive, derogatory or potentially defamatory.
    • Submissions exceeding a Similarity Index of 20% will be disqualified from consideration for the competition.
    • All references must be appropriately hyperlinked within the text of the article itself. If there is no online source available/such referencing is otherwise not possible, footnotes may be used.
    • Defined terms should be made bold and placed inside (parenthesis) at the first occurrence. For example: the Competition Commission of India 2002 "(CCI)".
    • Cases should be cited using the full name of the parties whenever possible. Cases should be cited in italics. Please note, if a case is used as a defined term, it should be made bold and italics and placed inside (parenthesis) at the first occurrence. Thereafter, the defined term should continue to be used in italics. For example: ABC Private Limited v XYZ (ABC).
    • Statutes should be referred to by their full name, including the year, at the first occurrence. Please note, we avoid using a comma between the name of the statute and the year. For example: Companies Act 2013.
    • When referring to a particular section / regulation / article of any statute, the first letter thereof should be capitalized. For example: Section 18 or Regulations 42 and 43.
    • Dates are formatted as follows: 31 March 2019 or 1 April 2020.
    • Direct quotes from any judgement / order should be italicized and placed inside "double quotes".
    • Indicate emphasis by italicizing the relevant word / phrase. When adding emphasis on quoted material, the relevant word / phrase should be underlined and the quote should be followed by the phrase "(emphasis supplied)".
    • The articles must be formatted with Times New Roman font, size 12, and line spacing set to 1.5.
    • The footnotes must be typed in Times New Roman, Font Size 10, and with single line spacing. Footnotes are permitted to conform to either the Bluebook 20th edition or the OSCOLA 4th edition citation style, as long as the citation form so chosen remains uniform throughout the submission.
    • The margins should measure 1 inch on all sides. All text should be justified.

    SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

    1. Following the registrations, Team codes will be allocated through mail to the participants.
    2. A separate mail will be sent for the submissions. All the submissions should be made as a reply to that mail. Submission in any other form will lead to disqualification.
    3. The article should be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). The Word document must be named as the respective team codes.
    4. The author's name should remain absent throughout the article, including within file properties and metadata.
    5. Submissions after the deadline will not be considered.

    ELIGIBILITY

    • The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students who are enrolled in any discipline at a recognized law university, college, or institute.
    • Co-authorship is allowed.
    • Cross-institutional teams are allowed.
    • Only one submission per author is allowed.
    • There is no restriction on the number of entries from any college or university.

    REGISTRATION DETAILS

    • Single authorship – Rs. 250.
      • [For an IDIA scholar – Rs. 50]
    • Co-authorship (Maximum 2) – Rs. 400.
      • [In case of both the authors being IDIA scholars – Rs. 100]
      • [In case of only one of them being an IDIA scholar – Rs. 150]

    Participants willing to register are required to fill up the registration form and attach a screenshot of the payment. Please note that the amount specified is merely the minimum contribution and the participants are at liberty to contribute more to the cause of IDIA if they wish to.

    TIMELINE

    • Registration starts – 22nd November, 2023.
    • Registration closes – 22nd December, 2023. (11:59 PM)
    • Submission deadline – 25th December 2023 (11:59 PM)

    2. Runner-up

    i. Publication at Indian Review of Corporate and Commercial Laws (IRCCL).

    ii. Cash Prize – Rs. 2000.

    3. Third Position

    i. Publication at Indian Review of Corporate and Commercial Laws (IRCCL).

    ii. Cash Prize – Rs. 1000.

    The top 20 participants will get the opportunity to attend a workshop that will revolve around Legal Writing and Publications. The workshop intends to enhance and upgrade the legal writing skills of the participants and provide insights into the varied aspects of publications. The workshop will be addressed by Deeksha Malik (Senior Associate, Khaitan & Co). She is recognized as part of BW Legal World 30 under 30 Lawyers and Legal Influencers (2021 and 2022) and by Mondaq as a Thought Leader in Employment Law category (India). She is also the Founder and Senior Editor of The Indian Review of Corporate and Commercial Laws (IRCCL). Furthermore, she has more than 60 publications in her name.

    All the participants of the workshop will be provided with separate digital certificates.

    Additionally, the Top 10 candidates shall be awarded with Certificate of Merit: and all the participants will receive a Certificate of Participation. All the certificates shall be sent out digitally, in .PDF format.
