    Pravertna Sulakshya, BA.LL.B (Hons.) 3rd year, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab won the First Prize for essay titled "An IPR-Kajal for Dupes' Evil Eye? Exploring the "Space" for Makeup Dupes in the Indian IP Framework" in The Third Shamnad Basheer Essay Competition 2022 on Intellectual Property Law. The essay entries were adjudged by Prof. Shubha Ghosh, Crandall Melvin Professor of Law and Director of the Technology Commercialization Law Program and the Syracuse Intellectual Property Law Institute at Syracuse University College of Law in Syracuse, New York, United States and Prof Srividhya Ragavan, Professor of Law at the Texas A&M School of Law and the Faculty Director of the School's International Legal Studies Program.

    The essay is about the challenges and opportunities presented by 'dupes', as distinguished from counterfeits in the fashion industry. It details the standard IP tools of patents, copyrights and trademarks, noting the gaps in the Indian context, vis-a-vis dupes. Recognising the diverse benefits brought on by the thriving of the dupes industry, the essay suggests that these be left to the negative spaces IP scholarship.
