The Allahabad High Court on Saturday inaugurated a "Law Museum and Archives" Wing, to preserve historical documents and artifacts relating to the Indian judicial system.

The wing was virtually inaugurated by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ashok Bhushan, who was also the one to lay its foundation in September 2019.

"Law museum and archives shall be able to present our historical and judicial treasures in more elegant way which will be easily accessible to common people due to its convenient location away from crowded precincts of High Court.

The history of any society or organisation, including judiciary, is relevant and gives inspiration to the society and its members of imitating the good deeds and achievements made in the past", Justice Bhushan said.

The Museum consists of an Exhibition gallery, containing historical documents and artifacts relating to the Indian judicial system and an Audio-visual Room, to educate the visitors about the history of the judicial system through short-videos.

The Wing has been established under the guidance of Chief Justice Govind Mathur, and under the supervision of a Committee headed by Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice of the J&K High Court.

"Law museum is necessary to make aware the new comers in the judicial prof about history of law courts and history of courts," Justice Mithal said during the virtual ceremony.

He thanked Justices Manoj Kumar Gupta and Siddhartha Verma of the Allahabad High Court, also members of the Committee appointed to supervise the construction of the Law Museum.

He also congratulated Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court, Ajai Kumar Srivasatava-I; Director of Construction & Designs Committee, Gulab Chandra Dubey and UPPWD, Prayagraj, Ashok Kumar Dwivedi for their efforts and cooperation

The ceremony was also graced by the virtual presence of Justices Vineet Saran and Krishna Murari, Judges of the Supreme Court; Justice Vikram Nath, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; and Judges of the Allahabad High Court viz., Justices Ritu Raj Awasthi, Vivek Kumar, Rajnish Kumar, Virendra Kumar Srivastava, Kumar Pachori, Mahesh Chandra Tripathi, Sunita Agarwal, etc.

In his address, Chief Justice Govind Mathur expressed his request that the new Museum should be declared as the "National Museum of Judiciary". Responding to this, Justice Bhushan said that he will submit a proposal in this regard with the Chief Justice of India.

Inter alia, the High Court has installed Escalators at the premises of the High Court. This has served a long-standing demand of the Bar, as all the Courts at Allahabad are situated at the first floor and senior members of the Bar often faced difficulty in climbing the staircase.
