The Supreme Court has directed the Gujarat government to provide for 50 per cent of the seats to be reserved in post graduate diploma courses for medical officers in government service, who have served for at least three years in remote and/or difficult areas.

A bench comprising Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar passed this order on a special leave petition by medicos who had challenged the state government order of granting only 25 per cent reservation to in-service candidates for admission in PG medical diploma courses.

The bench also directed the government to issue notification with regard to remote and/or difficult areas, if the same has not yet been done.

The state government was also directed to grant the reservation to in-service candidates in the second round of counselling, starting tomorrow (Saturday) for admissions in PG courses.

Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had upheld the state government decision to provide 25 per cent of post graduate diploma medical seats to in-service doctors and 3 per cent to the physically challenged.

The petitioner medicos had sought for 50 per cent seats for in-service candidates in the PG medical seats.
