The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the execution of the non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against social activist Madhu Kishwar by a Srinagar court in a defamation case.

The apex court also issued notice to the complainant, Shujaat Bukhari, Editor-in-Chief of daily Rising Kashmir, after Madhu Kishwar approached the apex court against the NBW.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra passed the order after senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that even lawyers were not allowed to appear for her in the case and the court should grant stay on the execution of NBW against his client.

In April this year, a Srinagar court had issued an NBW against Madhu Kishwar after she failed to appear for a hearing in the case.

Bukhari had filed a complaint against Madhu Kishwar, accusing her of making baseless allegations and defamatory statements against the newspaper on Twitter.

In July 2016, Kishwar had alleged that the daily had received funding from agencies to speak in favour of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence.
