    The Supreme Court today issued notice in a plea highlighting the vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission. The matter was listed before a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha. The Public Interest Litigation was filed by Radhakanta Tripathy who appeared in person to argue that there were three vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission of–1....

    The Supreme Court today issued notice in a plea highlighting the vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission. The matter was listed before a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

    The Public Interest Litigation was filed by Radhakanta Tripathy who appeared in person to argue that there were three vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission of–

    1. Judicial Member, who has to be a Judge or a former Judge of the Supreme Court;

    2. Judicial Member, who is or was a Chief Justice of the High Court; and

    3. A seat for a woman member.

    As per the petitioner, the existing seats were  fallen vacant on 11 September 2021, 4 January 2023 and 4 April 2022 respectively.

    The court issued notice in the matter and made it returnable in three weeks. The court also provided liberty to serve the Central Agency.
