Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud today (May 17), before pronouncing the judgement on the issue of promotion of Gujarat Judicial Officers, recalled how the said judgement was worked upon while he was in flight to Rio De Janeiro for attending the 'J20 Summit'.  The CJI shared this to highlight how the judges can make an effective use of the technology in completing judgements on time.

The CJI mentioned that during his flight journey, he used the flight internet to collaborate on the judgement with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. He said that Justice JB Pardiwala, who wrote the judgment, shared the draft with him while he was on flight. After that, using the flight internet, CJI virtually connected with Justices Pardiwala and Manoj Misra to finalise the judgment. CJI said that this was done to ensure that the judgment is delivered without any delay.

Justice Pardiwala, in a lighter vein, added that the judgment will be very close to his heart since the draft travelled from India to Brazil.

In a lighter vein, Senior Advocate Mr AM Singhvi remarked that the judgement may get cited by the concerned airlines to highlight the effectiveness of the airline's internet.

Today, the Top Court upheld the recommendations made by the High Court of Gujarat in 2023 for the promotion of Senior Civil Judges to the 65% promotion quota of District Judges on the basis of merit-cum-seniority principle.
