Observing that parallel proceedings before National Green Tribunal (NGT) and high court are not desirable, the Orissa High Court has stayed the proceedings before NGT in a case pertaining to elephant corridors till next date.

On April 6, the NGT had granted one month time to the State for notifying the elephant corridors and warned that otherwise the authorities shall be liable under section 26 of the National Green Tribunal Act.

Hearing a petition filed by the State against the NGT order, the division bench of Justice S. Muralidhar and Justice G.Satapathy noted that the court has in fact passed a series of orders in a pending PIL on the same issue of notification of an elephant corridor in Odisha.

"Parallel proceedings both in the NGT and this Court on the same issue is not desirable," said the court, while listing the State's petition for hearing along with the pending PIL.

While issuing a notice on the petition, the court said, "Further proceedings in Execution Application No.3 of 2022/EZ in O.A. No.129 of 2016/EZ shall remain stayed till the next date."
