In a detailed unanimous judgment released today, the Supreme Court bench of seven Judges including Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose who retired on May 27, has given detailed sequence of events and the reasons why it  found Justice Karnan of Calcutta High Court guilty of contempt of court, and sentenced him to six months imprisonment.  The bench concluded that his actions constituted grossest and gravest contempt of court.  On May 9, the bench had released a brief order stating that details would follow later.  Significantly, today’s judgment is also dated May 9, as if to answer the criticism that Justice Ghose, who retired in the interim, could not have signed it.

While the main judgment has been authored by the Chief Justice J.S.Khehar, on behalf of himself, and the remaining six Judges, Justices J.Chelameswar and Ranjan Gogoi, have thought it fit to record their own reasons in their separate orders.
