Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, accused of subjecting his deceased wife Sunanda Pushkar to cruelty and abetting her to commit suicide, was on Wednesday allowed by a Delhi court to travel abroad to several countries from August 10.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted Tharoor the permission to travel to five countries, including the USA, Canada and Germany, upon furnishing a fixed deposit of Rs 2 lakh. The Fixed Deposit Receipt will be released once he returns to India.
Tharoor has also been directed to submit in advance the itinerary of his travel and places of his stay abroad.
He has also been told to submit his itinerary to the investigating officer within seven days of his return.
The Delhi Police opposed his plea saying they wanted to check the veracity of the invitations he has received to travel to various destinations, to which Tharoor’s counsel said he was ready to file a certificate to authenticate the printouts of the invitations.
Tharoor has been booked under Sections 498A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
His wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a suite in Leela Hotel in South Delhi on January 17, 2014.
Tharoor is at present on regular bail.
