The Delhi High Court, on Tuesday, dismissed as infructuous a Petition challenging the election of Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta  as the President of the Badminton Association of India in the year 2014.

The Court was hearing a Petition filed by Dr. Surendra Poonia, who had challenged the elections as being "unfair, arbitrary, without any rationale and against the rules and laws applicable to the Badminton Association of India".

It noted that Dr. Gupta had expired in April this year and that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has since replaced him as the President of the Association through fresh elections.

Opining that the Petition would have an "extremely demoralizing effect" on the Association, the Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar then observed, "Judicial notice can be taken of the contribution made by the Badminton Association of India to the development of the sport of badminton wherein Indian players have achieved international accolades and laurel, that too repeatedly at every level in international tournaments."
