Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Supreme Judge of Sharia Courts of the State of Palestine, has directed judges not to grant divorces during the month of Ramzan.
According to Al Jazeera, Judge Habbash’s reasoning for the same was based on his “experience of previous years” where he found that the people tend to make hasty “ill-considered decisions” during this time as they have not eaten or smoked cigarettes.
People tend to lose their temper quickly and have arguments during this time, the report states.
Hence, Judges will only be able to rule on divorce applications after the month long fast gets over.
In 2015, 50,000 weddings took place in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, but more than 8,000 divorces were also registered.
Under the Palestine Order in Council 1922-1947, the Sharia Courts were given jurisdiction to adjudicate marriages, divorce, maintenance, Legal capacity and Guardianship, Custody of children, Genealogy of children, Wakf, Inheritance etc.
