JNU Professor Atul Johri, accused of sexual misconduct with several female students, was on Tuesday granted bail by a Delhi court within hours of his arrest.

Johri was arrested by Delhi police at 5:42 PM on Wednesday following protests by angry students at Vasant Kunj a day earlier, and by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association earlier in the day.

He was produced before duty magistrate Ritu Singh before whom he moved a bail plea saying remanding him in jail would be adverse to his career.

He was granted bail about 7 PM, sources said.

The bail was furnished on a bail bond of Rs.30,000 for each of the eight FIRs registered against him. The police had sought 14-day custody of Johri who was subjected to questioning earlier in the day.

Johri, a professor of Department of Life Sciences, was arrested after an FIR was registered based on at least eight complaints of sexual harassment.

Several complainants are reported to have accused Johri of making sexually-coloured remarks and openly demanding sex.
