Online Lecture on Fundamental Duties marks Republic Day

In order to raise awareness about democratic conduct and mark 73rd Republic Day of India , Centre for Constitutional Law and Governance, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell, organised online lecture, "Mapping Fundamental Duties in Contemporary India".

Prof. Amar Pal Singh, Dean, University School of Law & Legal Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi addressed the faculty and students of RGNUL. While mapping fundamental duties in the Indian context, Prof. Amar Pal Singh reminded the participants about the gospel of selfless action by alluding to verses from Bhagvad Gita. "Due to differences in viewpoints, escalating dissensus marks contemporary India," said Prof. Singh. He said , "Duties and Rights are correlative. Citizens must uphold ideals of the founding fathers of the nation and discharge duties for peace and harmony." Citing Bhagvad Gita and Kant's philosophy, he explained duty as volitional expression of conscience that could be understood in cultural context. Prof. Singh added, " Duty is sense of moral obligation which ennobles conduct." Elaborating on the meaning of Bharat as community engaged in search of truth, he reiterated that citizens must always set precedent by performing fundamental duties. He also quoted the audDr Radhakrishnan's words on duty, "sum total of karma in community," while addressing the audience.
