The Centre, on Friday, appointed Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai as the Acting Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court, with effect from 1 July. The notification was issued in view of the retirement of current Chief Justice Satish Kumar Agnihotri.

Justice Rai did her LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and enrolled in the Bar Association of Delhi in 1990. She was appointed as the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class –cum- Civil Judge (East) District at Gangtok, Sikkim the same year, becoming the first lady from Sikkim to be appointed to the said post.

She gradually made her way to be appointed as a Judge at the High Court in April, 2015, achieving another landmark of becoming the first lady from Sikkim to be elevated to the post. Currently, she is also the Executive Chairperson of the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority, and the President of the Sikkim State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
