The Society of International Law and Policy (SILP), West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, invites original and engaging blog submissions for a Special Edition of the SILP Blog commemorating the 80th anniversary of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, held its inaugural sitting in April 1946 and has, over the past eight decades, played a central role in the peaceful settlement of disputes between States and the development and clarification of international law. In marking its 80th anniversary in 2026, the Court has itself reflected on its evolving role and the challenges facing the international legal order.

Against this backdrop, SILP invites contributions that critically examine the past, present, and future of the ICJ, particularly in light of contemporary challenges to the international legal order and an increasingly complex and changing world order.

THEME

“Commemorating 80 Years of the International Court of Justice: The Court's Role in Contemporary International Law Amidst a Changing World Order and Its Future”

The Special Edition seeks to encourage critical and contemporary perspectives on the Court's jurisprudence, institutional role, challenges, and future trajectory. Contributors may explore, inter alia, the Court's contribution to the development of international law, its engagement with emerging areas of international law, questions of jurisdiction and compliance, the legitimacy and effectiveness of international adjudication, and the Court's role in addressing contemporary global challenges.

Contributors are not restricted to the above areas and are encouraged to explore innovative and interdisciplinary perspectives that meaningfully engage with the theme.

1. Long Articles & Discussions
Word Limit: 2000–2500 words

2. Short Articles
Word Limit: 1000–1500 words

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Contributions should engage with the International Court of Justice, its jurisprudence, contemporary international law, or related issues arising from the broader theme of the Special Edition.
  • Submissions must be original and unpublished.
  • References must be provided through hyperlinks within the text.
  • Submissions should demonstrate substantive engagement with the chosen issue and offer a clear and well-supported argument.
  • All submissions must comply with the SILP Blog Submission Guidelines.
  • Submissions must be made strictly through the designated submission form.

WHO CAN SUBMIT?

The Call is open to students, researchers, academicians, practitioners, and other individuals interested in contemporary international law and the work of the International Court of Justice.

We invite contributors to use this occasion to critically reflect on eight decades of international adjudication and examine how the ICJ may continue to shape the international legal order in the years ahead.
