CITIL, DNLU Jabalpur Concludes International Symposium On “Carbon Governance And Global Justice”

The Centre for Studies in International Trade and Investment Laws (CITIL) at Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, in collaboration with the WTO Chairs Programme (India Chair), the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, successfully concluded its two-day International Symposium on “Carbon Governance and Global Justice: Reconciling Trade Competitiveness and Climate Responsibility” held from April 24–25, 2026.

The Symposium was organized under the guidance of Dr. Utkarsh K. Mishra, Director, CITIL, with the support of Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice Chancellor, DNLU, and Dr. Praveen Tripathi, Registrar, DNLU.

The event commenced on April 24 with an inaugural ceremony graced by Mr. Ujal Singh Bhatia, Appellate Body Member, WTO (2011–2020) and India's former Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO, as Chief Guest. He also delivered the first expert talk on the global trade landscape and carbon pricing mechanisms.

A panel discussion on trade equity followed, featuring Mr. Seetharaman Sampath, Ms. Prachi Priya, Mr. Bose Varghese, and Dr. Gargi Chakrabarti.

On the second day, a specialized experts' panel discussion on carbon governance and climate justice included Prof. (Dr.) James J. Nedumpara, Dr. Shalini Dhyani, Dr. Atul Kaushik, Dr. Rosmy Joan, Dr. Ankit Awasthi, and Ms. Sunanda Tewari.

The academic sessions comprised four technical sessions chaired by experts including Mr. Bose Varghese, Dr. Ankit Awasthi, Mr. Seetharaman Sampath, Dr. Gargi Chakrabarti, Prof. (Dr.) Shailesh N. Hadli, Dr. Rosmy Joan, Dr. Shruti Nandwana, and Ms. Sunanda Tewari.

The symposium concluded on April 25 with a valedictory ceremony attended by Justice Vivek Agarwal, Judge, High Court of Madhya Pradesh, as Chief Guest. He emphasized the role of legal frameworks in balancing industrial growth and environmental protection.

Other dignitaries present included Prof. (Dr.) James J. Nedumpara, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Kulshreshtha, Dr. Shalini Dhyani, Dr. Atul Kaushik, and Dr. Rosmy Joan.

The event concluded with the announcement of the top five research papers and distribution of certificates. The symposium was noted for bridging academic research and real-world trade policy.
