NLU Odisha Organises Lecture Series On Judicial Journey And Corporate Law Practice

The Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC) of National Law University Odisha (NLUO) organised a lecture series featuring Dr Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, Judge of the Delhi High Court, and Tanavi Mohanty, Partner (General Corporate) at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, as part of its efforts to bridge academic learning with professional practice.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered a lecture titled “Journey to the Bench: Evolution from Advocacy to Adjudication.” The session focused on her transition from advocacy to judicial service, highlighting the professional milestones, challenges, and values that shaped her judicial journey.

During the interactive session, Justice Sharma emphasised the importance of compassion in judicial decision-making. She noted that empathy and sensitivity are essential qualities for judges while delivering judgments. She also highlighted the significance of trial courts, describing them as the foundational stage of a case where facts are closely examined, and stressed the need for diligence at this level.

Justice Sharma further spoke about the emotional demands of judicial work, particularly in view of the heavy caseload handled daily, and acknowledged the collective efforts of the judicial staff in supporting the functioning of the court.

Tanavi Mohanty delivered a lecture titled “First Year in Corporate Law Practice: Navigating the Path from Student to Professional,” primarily addressing fourth- and fifth-year students preparing to enter the legal profession. The session focused on the transition from academic life to corporate legal practice.

She discussed the essential skills required for young professionals entering corporate law firms and emphasised the importance of professional conduct in workplace settings. She highlighted that attention to detail plays a critical role in the early stages of practice and encouraged students to approach all assignments with seriousness and responsibility.

Mohanty also spoke about key areas of law relevant to corporate practice and the level of preparedness expected from first-year associates. The session concluded with an engaging interaction, with students raising questions on career development and professional readiness.

The lecture series concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. (Dr) Arjyalopa Mishra, who expressed gratitude to the speakers and noted that the sessions provided valuable insights to students.
