With only a few months to go for General Elections, the Union Cabinet, in what is termed as a major political move, has approved 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker upper castes.

Reports say that Government will move a Constitutional amendment to Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution to provide reservation for the upper castes in Govt jobs and education. Also reservation will be reportedly applicable to those earning Rs 8 lakh or less annually.

Article 15 (4) provides that state can make special provision for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. Similarly Article 16(4) allows the state to make any provision for the reservation of appointments or posts in favor of any backward class of citizens which, in the opinion of the State, is not adequately represented in the services under the State.
