Senior Advocate Nilayananda Dutta, serving as the Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh, passed away on Sunday, September 19.

He was in Coorg at a family holiday at the time.

Condoling his sudden demise due to a heart attack, the Bar Council of India issued a statement saying,

"Known for his tremendous legal acumen, he possessed extensive knowledge on a variety of legal subjects. His scholarly analysis of legal issues was greatly relied upon by the Courts and governments alike. He was a deeply revered and respected personality in the fraternity. In addition to his charm and charisma, he was wonderfully gentle, kind, modest and a selfless man.

His passing is a tremendous loss for the region and the legal fraternity. Those who knew him, and those whom he advised and counselled held him in great esteem and will feel his absence. His advice was a panacea for all problems.

The huge vacuum created by his demise cannot be filled up."

In the past, Dutta had served as the Advocate General for the state of Nagaland. He was also a passionate cricket administrator and an international cricket umpire.
