The Bar Council of Delhi has written to the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant condemning personal attacks on judges and asking bar members to exercise restraint and desist from amplifying unsubstantiated narratives that erode institutional integrity.

This comes in the wake of statements circulated on social media seeking resignation of the CJI.

A letter issued by the BCD addressed to the CJI, states that the judiciary is an indispensable pillar of our constitutional democracy. It states that the rule of law survives and flourishes only when the nation possesses an independent and effective judicial system.

"Levelling uncorroborated, sensational allegations especially across public and digital platforms- without concrete evidence creates unjustified prejudice, hinders the regular functioning of the justice delivery system, and lowers the dignity of the courts in the eyes of the public. While constructive criticism of judicial decisions is a recognized hallmark of a democratic society, unsubstantiated personal attacks cannot be tolerated and is condemnable," the letter states.

The BCD has further urged all bar members and responsible citizens to exercise restraint, uphold the majesty of the law, and desist from amplifying unsubstantiated narratives that erode institutional integrity.

Previously, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) have condemned statements circulated on social media seeking the resignation of the CJI, stating that such remarks belittle the institution of the judiciary and amount to an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice.
