The Karnataka High Court on Monday urged the state government to provide food packets to daily wage employees who may be deprived of earnings due to the spread of CoronaVirus and subsequent lockdown notified by the government, in several districts of the state.

Justice G Narendar said "I am making this request as a responsible citizen. Please see that food packets are prepared at Indira canteens and distributed to these daily wage employees who've lost their earnings. These are difficult times and only a 'humane approach' can save us from the disastrous and unfortunate situation."

The court made this oral observation after passing an interim order in case of an employee whose services were dispensed with by a defense establishment. The court ordered the employer not to terminate the employment of the worker.

Advocate S Basvaraju, Member Karnataka State Bar Council, who was present in the court said  "Justice Narendar, conveyed his heartfelt feelings to the Government Advocates present in court today. The government advocates agreed to convey the message to the authorities concerned immediately." Another advocate present in the court said "The court appealed that the building and construction workers welfare board could also work out some remedial measures for them."
