Delhi Court Stays Arrest Warrant Against SFI Leader Aishe Ghosh In 2021 Protest Case

A Delhi court on Wednesday stayed the execution of a non-bailable warrant issued against Students' Federation of India (SFI) leader Aishe Ghosh in connection with a 2021 case relating to a protest held outside Bangla Bhavan.

The FIR pertains to a demonstration organised in front of Bangla Bhavan in 2021. Ghosh has been booked for offences including alleged disobedience of an order promulgated by a public servant(S.188 IPC) and criminal trespass(S 447 IPC). Chargesheet has already been filed against her in the case.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class-05, Patiala House Court, stayed the warrant after Ghosh's lawyer submitted that her absence on the previous date of hearing was due to unavoidable circumstances. The Court stayed the warrant till the next date of hearing with a direction to Ghosh to appear in person.

The development comes a day after the Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleged that Delhi Police attempted to arrest Ghosh from the party's national headquarters in New Delhi. Videos circulating on social media showed CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas confronting a woman police official who was not in uniform.

Ghosh recently emerged as one of the prominent faces of the student agitation at Jantar Mantar led by the SFI over examination-related issues. The protests culminated in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25.  

Ghosh was represented by Advocates KN Jayashankar, KR Subhash Chandran and Jaimon Andrews.
