The Gujarat High Court, in collaboration with the Gujarat State Judicial Academy (GSJA), has launched a Study Circle (Symposium/Workshop) for advocates practising before the High Court with up to 10 years of practice, as part of an initiative to strengthen professional competence and promote continuous legal education among members of the Bar.

The programme was declared on August 15 by Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal, Patron-in-Chief of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy, after the Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the High Court lawns. The announcement was made in the presence of Justice Bhargav D. Karia, Judge of the Gujarat High Court and President of the GSJA, members of the Board of Governors of the Academy, other Judges of the High Court, Senior Advocates and members of the Bar.

The initiative is envisaged as a continuous learning programme through which advocates can enhance their legal knowledge, research skills and understanding of evolving legal principles with the guidance of Senior Advocates and subject experts.

First Phase Of Study Circle

The first phase will cover three academic modules dealing with important areas of High Court practice.

The first module, titled “Expanding Contours of 'Maintainability' in Writ Jurisdiction under Article 226,” will focus on the evolving principles governing maintainability of writ petitions.

The second module will deal with “Basic Principles of Administrative Law & Second Appeals under Section 100 CPC: The Doctrine of Substantial Question of Law.”

The third module will examine “Criminal Law Jurisdiction: Inherent Powers of High Courts under Section 482 CrPC / Section 528 BNSS – Scope, Limits and Judicial Discipline.”

The Study Circle is proposed to be conducted on a fortnightly basis and will subsequently cover a wide range of subjects, including Constitutional Law, Writ Jurisdiction, Arbitration and Conciliation Law, Commercial Law, Public Interest Litigation, Service Law, Taxation Law, Admiralty Jurisdiction, professional ethics, drafting skills and other contemporary issues relevant to High Court practice.

Registration for the “Study Circle (Symposium/Workshop Series) for Advocates Practicing in the High Court of Gujarat – Series of Academic Modules – 2026” will commence shortly through the official website of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy.

The programme is open to advocates practising before the Gujarat High Court who have up to 10 years of practice. Senior Advocates and subject experts will serve as resource persons, with the sessions being conducted at the Lecture Hall of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy at the High Court campus in Ahmedabad.

Each participant will be required to pay a registration fee of Rs. 100 per programme. Certificates of participation will be issued to advocates attending the workshops.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal emphasised the indispensable role of advocates in the administration of justice and highlighted the importance of continuous legal education in an era of rapidly evolving jurisprudence.

She stressed that effective advocacy and sound legal research are essential components of a robust justice delivery system and appreciated the efforts of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy in conceptualising the programme.

The initiative is aimed at fostering greater academic engagement between the Bench and the Bar while contributing to professional excellence among young advocates and strengthening the overall justice delivery process.
