Assurance Given That Gujarat Rent Bill 2026 Won't Be Signed: Advocate General Tells High Court Amid Lawyers' Strike
Gujarat's Advocate General Kamal Trivedi told the High Court on Monday (October 5) that in a meeting held between Bar Council of Gujarat and the State's Deputy Chief Minister, an assurance was given that the Gujarat Rent Bill 2026 will not be signed by the Governor and the original law will be restored.
The submission was made in a matter wherein the Advocate General was appearing.
For context, the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association today resolved to abstain from work for two days–October 5 and 6, in protest against the Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026.
It is claimed that the Bill takes away power to resolve disputes from the judicial authority and gives it to the administrative authority.
Advocate General Trivedi told a bench of Justice Maulik J Shelat that yesterday a meeting was held with Bar Council of Gujarat and Deputy Chief Minister wherein assurance was given that Bill will not be signed.
"Yesterday we had a meeting with all the Bar Council of Gujarat members in the presence of Hon'ble Deputy CM and we were given a promise that this Bill will not be signed by the Hon'ble Governor. This will not see the light of the day...We will try to see that original Act is restored. So all the lawyers should see that no work is struck. This was conveyed across the State. I personally talked to him (President of GHCAA) early in the morning, that please don't do this...It (Bill) will die in embryo. Despite that, it is unfortunate".
The AG said that all the gates to the high court have been closed and no one is allowed to come in. "The President promised me in the morning. He said that 'I will see strike is called off'...," the Advocate General said adding that on the contrary at 10:00 am today the strike was declared.
The court orally said that if something had happened overnight then it has to be communicated and that "sentiments of everyone should be respected".
"Nowadays it is very difficult to manage the board. We are told that we should not adjourn beyond vacation or give a long date. But considering every day..." the court orally said.
