Legal Jurist, author, former director of Indian Law Institute, founder and director of National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Dr. KN Chandrasekharan Pillai passed away on Friday at the age of 81.

Dr Pillai hails from Alappuzha district in Kerala. He completed his degree from the University of Kerala and received his LLB and LLM from the University of Delhi.

Dr Pillai initially practiced law before the Supreme Court of India before transitioning to academia at Campus Law Centre, Delhi University. He then moved to CUSAT and became the dean of School of Legal Studies, CUSAT. Dr. Pillai went on to serve as the founding director of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) in Kochi, and later worked as a Director of the Indian Law Institute. He has also held the position as the director of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.

Dr Pillai is also on the editorial board for Cochin University Law Review, Academy Law Review, Kerala Bar Council News, Bangalore Law Journal and editor of journal of Indian Law Institute. Dr Pillai has authored several books on criminal law.
