Justice Kaushal Jayendra Thaker, the former judge of the Allahabad High Court has been appointed as the chairperson of the Gujarat State Human Rights Commission (GSHRC).

Justice Thaker, who initially assumed his role as a judge in the Gujarat High Court on May 4, 2013, was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court on April 11, 2016. After serving as a judge for nearly seven years in Allahabad, Justice Thaker retired on September 3.

On Tuesday, Acharya Devvrat, the Governor of Gujarat appointed Justice Thaker as a Chairman of the GSHRC.

"After obtaining the recommendation from the Committee comprising of the Chief Minister, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and the Minister of State for Home, I (Governor) hereby appoint Justice Thaker as the Chairman of the GSHRC," the appointment warrant stated.

Justice Thaker's appointment is for a period of three years or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes earlier. Alongside Justice Thaker, the Governor also appointed Bharatkumar Suryakant Upadhyay, a former principal district judge, as a Member of the GSHRC.
