Kerala Court Denies Bail To Woman After Man She Accused Of Sexual Harassment In Viral Video Dies By Suicide
Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kunnamangalam, on Tuesday (27 January) denied bail to Shimjitha Musthafa, who has been charged with abetment of suicide of one U. Deepak, a salesman, under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The order was pronounced by Smt. Athira M, Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kunnamangalam.
Shimjitha is accused of abetment of suicide Deepak, whom she has accused of sexual misconduct on a moving bus in Kannur. Deepak committed suicide on January, 18, after a video was shot and posted on social media by Shimjitha, alleging that he touched her inappropriately on a crowded bus.
The clip was widely shared in social media platforms. The family of Deepak alleges that the subsequent online harassment led to the death of Deepak by suicide.
Following a complaint from the family of Deepak, an FIR was registered on 19 January and Shimjitha was arrested on January 21 by the Kozhikode Medical College.
After her arrest, she filed a complaint via email with Payyannur Police on January 22, alleging sexual misconduct where she alleges to have been sexually harassed while travelling on a private bus from Payyannur Railway Station to Bus Stand on January 16.
