The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the reopening of the speciality transgender clinic at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice PD Adikesavulu accordingly directed the State through the Dean of the concerned hospital to file a status report in this regard within 4 weeks.

The petition had been moved by a transgender activist who had apprised the Court on Wednesday that the exclusive transgender clinic at the concerned hospital had remained closed for the past one year as a result of which many transgender persons in the State were facing grave difficulty. Transgender persons were unable to access medical treatment for hormone therapy and other allied health concerns, the petitioner contended.

The matter is slated to be heard next on September 8.
