NALSA, Himachal Pradesh SLSA Organise Mega Legal Literacy Camp On Constitutional Values And Legal Awareness In Dharamshala

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (HPSLSA), organised a Mega Legal Literacy Camp at Dharamshala through the District Legal Services Authority, Kangra on June 6, 2026. The programme focused on the themes “Fundamental Rights and Duties: Present Scenario” and “Empowered, Capable and Harmonious Society – Constitutional Goal.”

The event was attended by Justice Vikram Nath, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, NALSA, as the Chief Guest. Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice Sanjay Karol, Judges of the Supreme Court of India; Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Patron-in-Chief, HPSLSA; Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Executive Chairman, HPSLSA; other Judges of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh; Sanjiv Pandey, Member Secretary, NALSA; other officers of NALSA; and distinguished guests were also present.


Introducing the theme of the programme, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur emphasised the need to enhance public awareness regarding constitutional rights and corresponding civic duties. Expert sessions were conducted on fundamental rights and duties and on the constitutional vision of an empowered, capable and harmonious society.

In his address, Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia highlighted the importance of legal literacy and access to justice. He encouraged legal professionals, social workers and citizens to actively safeguard the rights of vulnerable and marginalised sections of society.

Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice Sanjay Karol underscored the spirit of the Constitution, equal access to justice, and the social and moral responsibilities of citizens. They emphasised that legal literacy forms the foundation of a vibrant and participatory democracy.


Addressing the gathering, Justice Vikram Nath stressed the significance of legal awareness initiatives in ensuring that justice reaches every individual, particularly those at the grassroots level. He reiterated that ensuring access to justice for the last person in society remains a core objective of legal services institutions and urged citizens to imbibe and uphold constitutional values in their daily lives.

On the occasion, eleven Multi-Utility Vehicles were flagged off for deployment across eleven District Legal Services Authorities in Himachal Pradesh to strengthen outreach and enhance access to legal services in remote and underserved areas. Relief assistance was also distributed to disaster-affected families, and participants visited an exhibition showcasing legal awareness initiatives and legal services programmes.

The programme witnessed participation from judicial officers, advocates, government officials, academicians, students and citizens, reflecting a collective commitment towards strengthening constitutional values, legal literacy and access to justice.
