Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in Lok Sabha on Wednesday that there was no proposal before the central government to nationalize the 21 National Law Universities established by different states, reports the NDTV.
The Minister was replying to a query by Maneka Gandhi MP if there was any proposal to nationalize the National Law Universities (NLUs) and to provide them the same status as given to other National Institutes.
She asked if the Government is proposing to provide uniform academic standards and centralized funding to deal with the problems in the NLUs.
"The management of NLUs is done by them and the academic curriculum and standards is decided by them in consultation with the Bar Council of India.", said the Minister in reply.
There are 21 National Law Universities at Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Kolkata, Jodhpur, Raipur, Gandhinagar, Lucknow, Patiala, Patna, Kochi, Odisha, Ranchi, Guwahati, Vishakhapatnam, Thiruchirapalli, Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Shimla and Jabalpur.
They are established by laws enacted by State legislatures.
