The Supreme Court today dismissed a PIL [WP (Criminal) 98 of 2013] filed against pharma company Ranbaxy, for allegedly manufacturing and selling substandard drugs in India, due to lack of sufficient evidence against the company.
A Supreme Court Bench comprising of Justices A K Patnaik and Ranjan Gogoi said, “Your entire argument is based on proceedings in US. We have no jurisdiction over it. Show us material that things are happening in India and it adversely affects right to life of people here."
Ranbaxy USA had admitted to selling substandard and adulterated drugs and was asked to pay a fine of 500 million dollars by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).
The petition was filed by Supreme Court lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma. Speaking to Live Law Sharma said, “The Court has not dismissed my petition but has only asked to bring more evidence and file a fresh petition. I will be re-filing soon as directed by the Court.”
