Rules of admission in medical colleges for Gujarati students appearing for board exams in other states have reportedly been challenged before the Gujarat High Court by a serviceman’s daughter. These rules prescribe that a student who has cleared the board exam from outside the state cannot get admission in Gujarat's medical colleges through admission committees. While this rule was amended for engineering colleges last year to include eligible students who are of Gujarati origin and whose parents are in government service or in defence service and are on deputation outside the state, no such change has been brought in for admission in medical colleges.
The petition has been brought about by Nina Vadhel, daughter of Nayab Subedar Punjabhai presently posted at Uttarakhand. She has just cleared board exams from outside Gujarat and is now seeking admission in MBBS here.
The Court accordingly issued notices to the Chairman of the Admission Committees, the state education department to submit their replies by next Monday.
