rThe Tamil Nadu Government has extended 100% exemption on all Battery-Operated Vehicles both, Transport and Non-Transport (Electric Vehicles) from payment of Motor Vehicle Tax.

Electric vehicle adoption in Tamil Nadu has already reached 7.8% in 2025, the Minister of Industries said.

Aligning with the State's Electric Vehicle Policy, staring January 01, 2026 till December 31 2027, all Electric Vehicles shall be exempt from tax under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974.

The Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy was notified by the Industries Department to create a comprehensive EV ecosystem covering manufacturing, charging, and usage. The key incentives under the Policy includes 100% road tax exemption for various categories of electric vehicles (including e‑carriers and other EVs) registered up to December 30 2022, with related transport notifications implementing this under the policy. Industrial incentives include SGST reimbursement on EVs manufactured and sold in Tamil Nadu (till 2030), capital subsidies (around 15–20% for EV and battery units), land cost subsidies, stamp duty exemptions, and other incentives.

In this vein, Honourable Minister for Industries Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa in a post on December 30 2025, highlighted about the State's 'Pro Industry' approach. He acknowledged that there was still a long way to go, particularly in strengthening charging infrastructure and ensuring that the entire supply chain becomes greener
