NUJS Kolkata on Sunday hosted the Eastern Zonal Round finals of the AmiQuiz Curiae quiz conducted by Qshala in partnership with LiveLaw.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi (Judge, Calcutta High Court) and Dr S Muralidhar (Senior advocate and former Chief Justice, Orissa HC) were the keynote speakers at the event.
On the topic of legal education and social responsibility, Justice Bagchi stated that these days, legal education had become a pathway for corporate jobs. He addressed the vision of Prof (Dr) Madhava Menon who set up the first NLU in Bangalore and said that his vision was to create bold, intrepid minds to uphold constitutional liberty and ideas mentioned in the preamble.
He believed that students must balance economic needs with social upliftment. Work for themselves, but also to serve the nation and towards the cause of justice
Dr Muralidhar echoed the sentiments of Justice Bagchi and stated that the vision with which the five-year law course had been set up had not been achieved as it was meant. He stated that lawyers, like doctors, could not discriminate among those who sought help from them.
He stated that though students could not be blamed for making certain choices, a career in the legal profession, helping in the cause of social justice, would serve as rewarding for them as well.
Finally, he stated that law schools must be a place where students look inward and question their individual sense of inclusivity, fraternity, etc, and that law students needed to inculcate a sense of justice within themselves, so that they can identify injustices happening around.
