Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Supreme Court challenging an order directing her to vacate a Circuit House in Nadia, West Bengal.

Appearing for Moitra, her counsel told the Supreme Court that the local administration issued the eviction order late at night, despite a direction from the Calcutta High Court granting her protection.

He requested the Chief Justice for a listing on an early date, saying that the matter raised important questions relating to federalism and called for an independent investigation.

However, CJI Surya Kant expressed reluctance to entertain the plea at this stage. "Please keep it to yourself; we are not going to entertain," the CJI said.

On August 14, Moitra posted on her X account that she was issued an order by Nadia District Collector at 10.50 PM asking her to vacate the Circuit House, where she usually stays during her constituency visits. She stated that she had entered the Circuit House at 6.30 PM, and was served dinner at 9.20 PM. At 9.47, she got a call asking her to vacate, and was sent a copy of the order at 10.50 PM. She alleged that crowds chanting "Jai Shri Ram" had gathered outside the Circuit House. She later posted that she refused to vacate, saying “Supreme Court asked me to face bullets so here I am not backing down."

Earlier also, Mahua Moitra had flagged instances of mob intimidation against her. Last month, she had requested the Supreme Court to allow her to virtually appear before the police in connection with a case, raising the apprehension of mob attacks. However, the Supreme Court rejected her request, saying, "Having taken the plunge into politics, why do you fear eggs [being thrown on you]? Our freedom fighters took bullets on their chest."
