BREAKING| SC Collegium Recommends Elevation of Four HC Chief Justices, Senior Advocate V Mohana To Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of five persons as judges of the Supreme Court, including four sitting Chief Justices of High Courts and Senior Advocate V. Mohana, who practises at the Apex Court.

The recommendation was made at the Collegium meetings held on May 22 and 27.

The names recommended are :

Justice Sheel Nagu, presently Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court;

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court;

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court;

Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh; and Senior Advocate V. Mohana.

The appointment of Sr Adv V Mohana will add to the women's representation in the Supreme Court. The Court presently has only one woman judge, Justice BV Nagarathna. After August 2021, no woman has been appointed to the Supreme Court.

Recently, the strength of the Supreme Court was increased to 38 judges (including the CJI), raising the strength by four. The Court presently has 32 judges. Two more vacancies are to arise soon with the retirements of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Pankaj Mithal in June.
