Supreme Court Allows Bihar MP Pappu Yadav To Seek Urgent Hearing Before HC Against Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Threats
The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea filed by sitting Bihar MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav alleging death threats from the gang of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, and granted him liberty to move the High Court for urgent listing of his pending petition.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was informed that the petitioner's plea seeking protection had not been listed before the High Court since November 19, 2024.
Senior Advocate Shadan Farasat, appearing for Yadav, submitted that despite repeated mentions, the matter had not been taken up. He stated that Yadav currently has only “Y category” security with two personnel and referred to an alleged attempt on the life of the petitioner's brother. Farasat urged that the immediate relief sought was only for an early hearing before the High Court.
Justice Bagchi observed that the State appeared to have extended certain security arrangements, remarking that the petitioner also had private guards. However, Farasat clarified that, as per his instructions, Yadav did not have any private security and reiterated that threats from the Bishnoi gang had been issued openly. He further pointed out that even the High Court's notice order had not been uploaded, preventing the filing of a Special Leave Petition.
The Chief Justice noted that thousands of cases remain pending before High Courts and indicated the Court's reluctance to entertain such pleas directly.
In its order, the Court said that although it does not ordinarily intervene in such matters, it was inclined to grant limited relief considering the petitioner's grievance that his case had not been listed for several months.
“Though this Court ordinarily does not entertain such petitions, however, in light of petitioner's claim that his petition has not been listed since 19.11.2024, we grant him liberty to move a formal application before the High Court along with a copy of this order, with a prayer to list his petition,” the Bench recorded.
The Court added that it had not expressed any opinion on the merits of the case and expressed confidence that the High Court would consider the request and pass appropriate orders.
