The Supreme Court on Tuesday closed the contempt proceedings pending in relation to the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. The contempt petition was filed by one Mohammed Aslam Bhure in 1992 against the State of Uttar Pradesh for violation of the undertaking given to the Court regarding maintenance of law and order in the area.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Abhay S Oka and Vikram Nath closed the contempt case taking note of the passage of time and the 2019 verdict of the Supreme Court which allowed the construction of Ram Mandir at the place of the demolished mosque.

The bench also noted that the contempt petitioner Bhure had passed away in 2010. In this backdrop, the bench observed that nothing survives in the matter.

The bench rejected a request for substituting the contempt petitioner with an amicus curiae.
