Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment Of Chief Justices In Four High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Chief Justices for four High Courts.

The Collegium has also recommended the transfer of Delhi High Court judge Justice V. Kameswar Rao as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge, who is presently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, has been recommended as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi, presently a judge of the Allahabad High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Further, the Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, who is presently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the Chief Justice of that High Court.

The recommendations were made by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and will now be forwarded to the Union Government for consideration. The appointments will take effect after the Central Government accepts the recommendations and issues the necessary notifications.

Currently, seven of the country's twenty-five High Courts are functioning without permanent Chief Justices. Bombay, Calcutta, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Patna, Punjab and Haryana, and Rajasthan are presently headed by Acting Chief Justices following recent retirements and elevations to the Supreme Court. If approved by the Central Government, the latest recommendations would fill five of these vacancies.
