Terming it as infructuous, the Supreme Court of India recently disposed of a petition which asked the Union of India and all the States government to provide homeless persons in shelter homes set up by the Municipalities and other places with three nutritious and adequate meals every-day during the entire COVID-19 pandemic period.

"From the aforesaid, it can be seen that the reliefs sought were for the period during Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, by efflux of time and in view of the subsequent development, the present Writ Petition for the aforesaid reliefs has become infructuous. Keeping other questions open, to be considered in the pending proceedings, we dispose of the present Writ Petition. The Writ Petition stands disposed of accordingly", a Bench of Justices MR Shah and MM Sundresh said in the order.

The petition moved by the National Campaign Committee For Eradication Of Bonded Labour (NCCEBL) & Anr also sought for a direction to all the respondents to ensure that all the entitlements mandated by the National Food Security Act, 2013 are provided to all homeless people in or around all the shelter homes. Further, the plea sought for the respondents to provide soaps, detergents, hand sanitizers, hand wash and masks to the homeless persons in shelter homes.
