With the appointment of Justice Sunita Agarwal, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, the Supreme Court now has three sitting women judges.

The highest number of women judges the Supreme Court had at a time was 4, when Justices Indira Banerjee, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna and Bela Trivedi were present simultaneously from August 2021 till Justice Banerjee's retirement in September 2022. Justice Hima Kohli retired in September 2024 followed by Justice Bela M. Trivedi in May 2025. After Justice Trivedi retired in May 2025, Justice Nagarathna was the sole woman judge until the elevation of Justice Mohana a year later.

Notably, this is the second appointment of a woman judge by the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant-led Collegium after Justice Mohana.

With the present additions, the Supreme Court's working strength stands at 37 judges, with one vacancy against the sanctioned strength of 38 judges, which will be reduced to one more with the upcoming retirement of Justice Satish Chandra Sharma in November. It may be noted that the sanctioned strength was increased from 34 to 38 judges recently.
