TP Chandrashekharan Murder : Supreme Court Seeks Medical Report On Convict Geothi Babu's Interim Bail Plea
The Supreme Court on Friday sought a medical report on the health condition of Geothi Babu, one of the convicts in the TP Chandrashekharan murder case, after he sought interim bail on the grounds of kidney ailments.
A bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma adjourned the matter, seeking the report of a medical board constituted by the Kannur Medical College regarding Babu's condition. The matter will be considered after ten days.
Senior Advocate S Nagamuthu, for Geoti Babu, submitted that he was aged nearly 65 years and his condition was very precarious as he was undergoing dialysis, and was in urgent need of a kidney transplant.
The State, while saying that it opposed the plea on merits, said that it was not objecting to the grant of interim bail on medical grounds.
Justice Datta observed that the person must remain alive to enforce the conviction. Justice Sharma asked if any donor had been identified. When Nagamuthu said the donor could be arranged, Justice Sharma said that it was not an easy procedure.
Geothi Babu was initially acquitted by the trial court in the case over the murder of TP Chandrashekaran. In 2024, the Kerala High Court set aside the acquittal of Babu and another accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Altogether, 12 persons were convicted in the case.
T P Chandrasekharan, a former member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who later formed a new political party called the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP), was hacked to death on a public road on May 4, 2012. The Courts found that it was a politically motivated murder orchestrated by persons associated with the CPI(M).
