The Bombay High Court has held that making Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools available which allow the conversion of any voice into that of a celebrity without consent amounts to a violation of personality rights.
Justice Arif S. Doctor was hearing a suit filed by legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who approached the Court against companies accused of developing and offering AI-based applications that cloned her voice to generate songs and other content. The applications also allegedly used her image and likeness for merchandise, posters and online promotion without her permission.

A single judge bench of Justice Arif S Doctor, while restraining several known and unknown individuals from misusing Shetty's persona, remarked that the acts of exploitation “can best be described as a lethal combination of a depraved mind and the misuse of technology resultantly causing harm to the Plaintiff's personality rights.”

While protecting the personality rights of Bollywood Actor Akshay Kumar, the Bombay High Court has expressed concern over the "realistic" nature of deepfake images and videos being created by using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Single-judge Justice Arif S. Doctor in his October 15 order said, in such cases of celebrities seeking protection of personality rights, it is alarming to see that the content created by AI is deceptive and so sophisticated that it would not be possible for anyone to understand if it is fake or genuine.
